Kuala Lumpur, Feb 1 – On February 1st, we celebrate the Federal Territories Day, which honours both the history and the future of these regions. This year is especially meaningful, as it marks 50 years since the Federal Territories were established, showing a remarkable journey of growth and development.
Malaysia comprises three Federal Territories (Wilayah Persekutuan): Kuala Lumpur, serving as the nation’s capital; Putrajaya, designated as the federal administrative capital; and Labuan, recognised as an offshore international financial center.
Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya are enclaves in the state of Selangor, while Labuan is an island off the coast of Sabah.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Dr. Zaliha Mustafa said the year 2024 marks the 50-year journey of the Federal Territories as a landmark in the nation’s development.
“Moving forward together, we continue to build stability, prosperity, and happiness for every citizen in the Federal Territories. Throughout its half-century existence, the Federal Territories have been have been the driving force of Malaysia’s economic, social, and cultural development over the past five decades,” she said in her speech in conjunction with the Federal Territories Day.
With Kuala Lumpur as their core, these territories have been the hub of innovation, opportunity, and diversity, representing the best of a progressive and inclusive society.
The theme for this golden jubilee, ‘MADANI Territory, Harmonious People’, captures the spirit of the Federal Territories – a place where prosperity and harmony flourish amidst diversity.
It reflects both the accomplishments of the past and the goals for the future, where unity and cooperation lead to a brighter tomorrow.
Marking this occasion with a heartfelt reflection on the journey of the Federal Territories, Dr Zaliha, emphasised the vital role they have played in the country’s growth over the past half-century, stressing the need for continued collaboration to ensure stability, prosperity, and happiness for every citizen.
As part of the celebrations, a major step forward was taken as she unveiled the Draft Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040.
This document is crucial as it charts the course for the future development and direction of Kuala Lumpur over the next 16 years.
It proposes strategies and initiatives to improve the livability, sustainability, and resilience of the city, making sure it stays a vibrant and dynamic metropolis for generations to come.
“As we set out on this journey towards Kuala Lumpur 2040, it is essential for all residents of the Federal Territories to unite in diversity, creating a sense of belonging and ownership in shaping the fate of our beloved city, said the minister.
“Together, let us keep progressing and prospering, building on the foundation laid by the pioneers and visionaries of the past.
“As we rejoice in 50 years of the Federal Territories, let us embody the spirit of ‘MADANI Territory, Harmonious People’, and move forward with confidence and optimism towards a future full of promise and possibility,” added Dr Zaliha.
