KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 24 — Egyptian date producer Pyramisr for Agri Industry is seeking more Malaysian distributors as it expands beyond whole dates into new date-based products.

Internal Audit and Global Marketing Manager Magdy Talaat told TNS News at the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) today that the company began exporting to Malaysia about three years ago. It shipped six containers to the market last year and expects that number to rise in 2026.

“Malaysia is a very big market,” Magdy said.

Pyramisr, which markets its produce under the tagline “Daily Dates Daily Health”, built its business on dates. Its expanded range gives the company more products to offer existing customers, while creating a need for distributors who can bring them to a wider Malaysian market.

“All these products are new, and we expect they succeed in this market,” Magdy said.

He said gaining new customers had become more important now that the company was producing new lines, and that Pyramisr had come “all this distance from Egypt” in the hope of finding more distributors.

This is Pyramisr’s third consecutive year at MIHAS. Magdy said the trip from Egypt allows the company to strengthen its Malaysian business and meet prospective buyers from other countries in one place.

He cited discussions with visitors from Bangladesh and China about possible shipments. He did not disclose the value of prospective orders or say that contracts had been signed at this year’s event.

Pyramisr specialises in Egyptian dates and handles processes including sorting, packaging, storage and shipping. It lists Malaysia among its export markets.

The company’s presence at MIHAS is also opening doors beyond Malaysia. Magdy said Pyramisr had met prospective buyers from Bangladesh and China at this year’s show, with discussions under way on possible shipments.

He said the wider MIHAS community had been helpful to participating companies. For Pyramisr, the showcase serves two purposes: access to Malaysian retailers, and a single venue in which to meet buyers from South Asia and East Asia.

“The value of returning to MIHAS lies in both parts of that opportunity: finding distributors for Pyramisr’s date-based products in Malaysia and developing buyer contacts that could lead to exports elsewhere,” said Magdy.

First held in 2004, MIHAS is organised by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) and the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE). It spans 14 sectors, from food and beverages and pharmaceuticals to modest fashion, Islamic finance and Muslim-friendly tourism.

The 22nd edition opened on 23 September at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) in Kuala Lumpur, with trade days running until 25 September and a public day on 26 September. Some 1,700 companies are taking part under the theme “Shaping Trust, Driving Resilience”.

Around 450 international buyers from 58 economies are attending through the International Sourcing Programme, with more than 4,000 business meetings scheduled and over RM5 billion in potential business targeted.

Malaysia’s halal product exports reached RM68 billion in 2025, and the country is aiming for more than RM80 billion by 2030.
