KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 9 – Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship in 2025 has officially commenced, marking a crucial moment for the region to tackle pressing challenges and redefine collaboration under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability.”

As regional leaders look to Malaysia for direction, Ambassador Ong Keng Yong offers invaluable insights into the nation’s ambitious agenda for the year ahead.

“Malaysia’s chairmanship presents an opportunity to address ASEAN’s most critical issues—geopolitical tensions, economic integration, and sustainable growth—while ensuring that inclusivity remains at the heart of its initiatives,” said Ong, a distinguished diplomat and former Secretary-General of ASEAN.

Currently serving as Executive Deputy Chairman of the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) at Nanyang Technological University, Ong is also Singapore’s Ambassador-at-Large and Non-Resident High Commissioner to Pakistan and Iran. His diplomatic expertise, including his tenure as ASEAN’s 11th Secretary-General, positions him as a key observer of Malaysia’s leadership trajectory.

Economic Integration for Resilience

At the core of Malaysia’s agenda is economic modernization through enhanced regional frameworks. Two key initiatives—the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA) and the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA)—are poised to drive integration and resilience across member states.

DEFA, in particular, holds transformative potential, with projections estimating ASEAN’s digital economy will grow to US$1 trillion by 2030. “Digitalisation is a cornerstone of Malaysia’s leadership vision, ensuring that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across ASEAN benefit from the digital revolution,” Ong highlighted.

Malaysia’s efforts aim to make ASEAN a competitive global economic bloc, fostering innovation while bridging development gaps.

Navigating Geopolitical Complexities

Inheriting longstanding issues such as the Myanmar crisis and the escalating US-China rivalry, Malaysia is expected to adopt a proactive stance.

“Malaysia will champion the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus, working with partners like China, India, and the United States to facilitate dialogue and peace in Myanmar,” Ong noted. By leveraging ASEAN centrality, Malaysia seeks to uphold regional stability amidst external pressures.

Sustainability as a Defining Agenda

Sustainability remains a pillar of Malaysia’s leadership, exemplified by projects like the ASEAN Power Grid, which promises greener energy, reduced emissions, and job creation.

“This initiative is an example of Malaysia’s commitment to sustainability and inclusivity, narrowing gaps among member states while addressing the region’s energy needs,” Ong remarked.

Malaysia’s vision aligns closely with the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, setting the tone for long-term economic, social, and environmental goals.

Strengthening Partnerships

As the bloc celebrates its 10th anniversary as an ASEAN Community, Malaysia’s role as chair coincides with other milestones, including its 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations with China and its recent induction into BRICS. These platforms provide avenues to amplify ASEAN’s global influence.

“Malaysia will prioritize partnerships that strengthen ASEAN’s relevance in a multipolar world, ensuring the bloc’s collective voice is heard on global issues,” Ong explained.

A Year of Transformation

Ambassador Ong succinctly summarized Malaysia’s role: “As chair, Malaysia has a unique opportunity to embrace innovation, champion unity, and steer ASEAN toward a more cohesive, inclusive, and resilient future.”

With bold initiatives and strategic partnerships at the forefront, Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship in 2025 promises to be a transformative chapter in the region’s history, fostering shared prosperity and stability.
