Putrajaya, Malaysia – In a landmark meeting on January 7, 2025, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Malaysian Prime Minister DatukSeri Anwar Ibrahim unveiled a series of ambitious new bilateral initiatives at the 11th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat.
The leaders emphasized the strong foundation of trust and friendship between the two nations, setting the stage for enhanced cultural, educational, economic, and environmental collaboration.
Speaking at a joint press conference, PM Wong expressed his gratitude to PM Anwar and the Malaysian government for their warm hospitality and accommodations following the postponement of the retreat due to his COVID-19 diagnosis last year.
“I am glad that we are able to start the new year on such a positive footing,” Wong stated, emphasizing the strong foundation of trust and friendship that anchors the bilateral relationship.
New Frontiers of Collaboration
Wong and Anwar announced several collaborative initiatives aimed at deepening ties and delivering tangible benefits for both nations.
- Cultural Cooperation:
The leaders celebrated shared heritage through joint nominations of the Kebaya and Chingay to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Malaysia will also host a Triennial Cultural Showcase this year in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. - Education and Skills Exchange:
Agreements were signed on higher education, including an initiative to exchange English teachers under the Malaysia-Singapore English Volunteers Programme. - Economic Growth through the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (SEZ):
The SEZ, a significant new project, aims to leverage the complementary strengths of Johor and Singapore to enhance competitiveness and attract investments. “The SEZ will create good jobs and more opportunities for our peoples,” Wong said, noting that negotiations have actively involved stakeholders to ensure sustainable growth. - Transport Connectivity:
With the Johor-Singapore RTS Link on track to commence services by late 2026, PM Wong highlighted its capacity to transport 20,000 passengers per hour, significantly alleviating current congestion. Singapore is also redeveloping the Woodlands Checkpoint to enhance border efficiency. - Green Energy and Sustainability:
Sustainability was a major focus, with discussions on cross-border electricity trading and the ASEAN Power Grid. Wong revealed progress on sourcing renewable energy from Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, and Sarawak. Additionally, the signing of MOUs on Carbon Credits and Carbon Capture and Storage underscores both nations’ commitment to combating climate change collaboratively.

Resolving Complex Bilateral Issues
PM Wong acknowledged discussions on longstanding issues such as airspace, water, and maritime delimitation. “These are complex issues, and while progress has been made, more time is needed for durable solutions,” Wong said.
He reaffirmed the commitment of both governments to engage constructively and in good faith.

Support for ASEAN
Singapore extended its full support to Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025. Wong expressed confidence in PM Anwar’s leadership in advancing ASEAN’s community-building efforts and strengthening ties with key partners.
60 Years of Diplomatic Ties
As the two nations mark 60 years of diplomatic relations, PM Wong reflected on the progress achieved and the mutual commitment to ensuring continued prosperity for both peoples. “I am glad to find in Prime Minister Anwar a partner equally committed to flourishing ties,” Wong said, expressing his anticipation of further engagements in the year ahead.
