KUALA LUMPUR, April 21 – Malaysia’s humanitarian response took a decisive turn today as the Malaysian Field Hospital (Hospital Medan Malaysia, HMM) officially began operations at 8:20am local time in Sagaing,
Myanmar—one of the worst-affected areas by the recent earthquake.Spearheaded by the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) under Operation STARLIGHT III, the HMM is a Level Two mobile hospital with a 20-bed capacity and fully equipped surgical, radiological, and intensive care units.
It is capable of conducting two surgeries simultaneously, and includes an outpatient clinic expected to treat 80 to 100 patients daily with assistance from three local doctors from Hospital Sagaing.
“The hospital’s readiness to handle critical procedures symbolises Malaysia’s regional commitment to humanitarian relief,” stated ATM officials from the Defence Intelligence and Strategic Communications Division.
Among those showing strong support on the ground were Sagaing Chief Minister Myint Naing and Lt Gen Thet Pon, Commander of Yangon Region Special Operations Bureau, who reviewed the facility’s setup and pledged logistical cooperation.
On 19 April, Myanmar’s top military leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, personally visited the site—underscoring Myanmar’s formal recognition and endorsement of Malaysia’s mission.
Just hours after opening, the field hospital began receiving patients in high volumes, with its first successful surgery performed by 10:30am. Locals, deeply impacted by the disaster, expressed gratitude for Malaysia’s swift action.
The HMM’s deployment reinforces Malaysia’s growing profile as a leader in regional disaster response and humanitarian diplomacy, fulfilling the nation’s vision of “Future Force: The Nation’s Defence Fortress.”
