KUALA LUMPUR, May 26, 2025 — On the eve of a historic week in regional diplomacy, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim chaired the final high-level preparatory meeting for the 46th ASEAN Summit and the inaugural ASEAN–GCC–China Summit, reaffirming Malaysia’s readiness to lead with clarity, confidence, and purpose.
In a Facebook post, Anwar shared that the meeting focused on final coordination efforts and key talking points ahead of multiple bilateral and multilateral engagements with regional and international leaders.
“Tonight’s meeting centred on detailed implementation and alignment on major issues to be raised, including bilateral discussions with fellow counterparts and regional leaders,” Anwar said. “Discussions also covered Malaysia’s approach to strengthening ASEAN unity, expanding strategic partnerships, and advancing common interests for regional stability and prosperity.”

Malaysia’s Strategic Moment as Host
Malaysia is hosting both the 46th ASEAN Summit and the first-ever trilateral summit involving ASEAN, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and China. As Chair of ASEAN 2025, Malaysia is pushing for a unified regional vision based on the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability”.
Anwar took the opportunity to thank all ministries, agencies, and officials involved in ensuring the seamless execution of the week’s high-stakes events.
“I express my deepest appreciation to all ministries, agencies, and personnel involved for their dedication and strong cooperation in ensuring that the summits are carried out smoothly and according to plan,” he said. “God willing, Malaysia is fully prepared to shoulder this responsibility.”
Chinese Premier Li Qiang Arrives in Kuala Lumpur
In a major development, Chinese Premier Li Qiang arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Monday to attend the first ASEAN–GCC–China Summit, underscoring Beijing’s commitment to deeper multilateral ties. This marks his second visit to Malaysia since assuming office in March 2023; his first was in June 2024 during the 50th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations.
Premier Li is expected to join talks on trade, investment, connectivity, green technology, and regional security — part of China’s growing engagement in ASEAN-led frameworks.
According to reports, Li was welcomed upon arrival by Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, who will play a leading role in this week’s strategic discussions.
Malaysia at the Centre of Regional Realignment
The ASEAN-GCC-China Summit is seen as a bold step toward reimagining Asia’s geopolitical partnerships amid a shifting global order. Anwar has described this trilateral framework as part of a “reshaping of the matrix of partnership” — a recognition that regional blocs must work together to forge a more inclusive, stable, and multipolar world.
Throughout the week, leaders will hold a series of high-level sessions focused on:
Regional economic integration,
Climate transition and digital transformation,
The South China Sea and Indo-Pacific security,
The ongoing Myanmar crisis,
And ASEAN’s long-term “2045 Vision.”
With Kuala Lumpur now the focal point of ASEAN’s future direction, Malaysia’s leadership is set to define how the region navigates disruption — and reinvents cooperation — in an increasingly fragmented world.
