UALA LUMPUR, Feb 15 — Malaysia is doubling down on regional energy integration to secure its energy future and bolster economic growth, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reaffirming the country’s commitment to the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) as a key driver of sustainable development.
Chairing the first National Energy Council (MTN) Meeting of 2025, Anwar emphasized that energy decarbonization and regional cooperation must go hand in hand if Malaysia and its ASEAN counterparts are to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
“There is a critical need for efficient, reliable, and resilient electricity infrastructure to stimulate regional economic development,” Anwar stated, stressing that Malaysia must accelerate its preparations for deeper ASEAN energy integration.

The ASEAN Power Grid, a decades-long vision to establish cross-border electricity interconnections, is expected to boost energy security and drive industrial growth across Southeast Asia. Anwar reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to accelerating its preparations, ensuring the country plays a leading role in regional energy collaboration.
“With increasing energy demand, strategic measures must be put in place to secure supply while maintaining Malaysia’s attractiveness for new and existing investments,” he added.
The MTN meeting signals Malaysia’s push to position itself at the forefront of ASEAN’s energy transformation, fostering cross-border partnerships for a greener, more resilient future.
