KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – May 26, 2025 — Leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have gathered in Kuala Lumpur for the 46th ASEAN Summit, commencing today under Malaysia’s chairmanship. The two-day summit, chaired by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, aims to address pressing regional and global issues, including economic resilience, geopolitical tensions, and sustainable development.
Malaysia’s Chairmanship: Steering Towards Inclusivity and Sustainability
As the ASEAN Chair for 2025, Malaysia is leading the bloc under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability.” Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan emphasized this vision during the 36th ASEAN Coordinating Council (ACC) Meeting, highlighting the transition from “ASEAN 2025: Forging Ahead Together” to “ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future.

The ASEAN 2045 vision aspires to build a resilient, inclusive, innovative, dynamic, and people-centered community. Under Malaysia’s leadership, there is a concerted effort to leverage advancements in science, technology, and innovation, particularly in digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), and quantum computing. The goal is to ensure that no member state is left behind in this digital evolution, enhancing economic growth, societal progress, and regional security.
The ACC meeting also reviewed the implementation of previous summit decisions, assessed Timor-Leste’s progress towards full ASEAN membership, and prepared various reports for the leaders’ deliberations.
Key Issues on the Summit Agenda
The summit’s agenda encompasses several critical areas:
- Economic Integration and Resilience: Discussions will focus on deepening regional economic ties, implementing the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Blueprint, and enhancing supply chain resilience. Leaders will also address the implications of external trade policies, such as the U.S. tariffs and the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and Deforestation-Free Products Regulation (EUDR), to ensure ASEAN’s exports remain competitive.
- Regional Stability and Security: Geopolitical developments, including the South China Sea disputes and the ongoing situation in Myanmar, are expected to feature prominently. Prime Minister Anwar has initiated separate talks with Myanmar’s junta leader and the opposition National Unity Government (NUG), signaling potential for direct dialogue amid the ongoing civil conflict.
- Climate Change and Sustainability: The summit will address the urgent need for collective action on climate change, promoting green transition initiatives, and fostering sustainable development across the region.
- Digital Transformation: Enhancing digital connectivity, cybersecurity, and leveraging technology, including AI, for economic growth and societal development will be central to discussions.
- ASEAN Community Vision 2045: Leaders will review progress and chart the path forward for the long-term vision of the ASEAN Community, aiming for a more integrated, prosperous, and resilient future.
- External Relations: The summit will also provide a platform to strengthen ASEAN’s partnerships with dialogue partners, including the European Union. Notably, this summit coincides with the second ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Summit, highlighting broader engagement.
Leaders Arrive in Kuala Lumpur
The Malaysian capital is abuzz as heads of state and government arrive for the summit. Among the notable attendees is Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, marking his first ASEAN Summit since assuming office. Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is also present, underscoring the significance of this gathering for regional cooperation and international engagement.
