KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 – Malaysia’s hosting of the 47th ASEAN Summit opened with a powerful show of diplomacy and deal-making, placing Kuala Lumpur at the heart of global attention.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim declared the first day “historic,” saying the country had become “the world’s diplomatic hub” with the attendance of leaders from ASEAN, the United States, Brazil, South Africa, Canada, Australia, the European Union and the United Nations.
“It was also a historic day, witnessing the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord between Cambodia and Thailand and a new Malaysia–U.S. trade agreement,” Anwar said in a Facebook post.
Peace Accord Signals ASEAN’s Maturing Role
The Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord, signed by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, and witnessed by Anwar and U.S. President Donald Trump, marked a dramatic step in de-escalating border tensions. The agreement enshrined commitments to a ceasefire, withdrawal of heavy weapons, and oversight by an ASEAN Observer Team — a first of its kind.
Trump’s Return to Asia Brings Trade Boost
Trump’s high-profile presence added both spectacle and substance. His bilateral with Anwar produced a Malaysia–U.S. trade agreement aimed at boosting market access and re-anchoring Washington’s economic footprint in Southeast Asia. Cambodia and Thailand also sealed tariff deals with the U.S., underlining ASEAN’s growing pull as a collective market.
ASEAN Expands and Integrates
The summit also welcomed Timor-Leste as ASEAN’s 11th member and advanced amendments to the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement to cut non-tariff barriers. These moves reinforced the bloc’s ambition to deepen integration even as it navigates external rivalries.

Balancing Symbolism with Substance
The first day’s outcomes highlighted ASEAN’s paradox: its strategic value has never been higher, yet its unity faces constant pressure from major-power competition. The peace accord and trade deals are breakthrough moments, but the harder test lies in implementation — ensuring the ASEAN Observer Team functions, tariff barriers actually fall, and Timor-Leste’s entry translates into full participation.
Day Two and Beyond
As the summit continues, Malaysia faces the challenge of sustaining the Day 1 momentum: aligning diverse member priorities, leveraging U.S. engagement without alienating China, and ensuring ASEAN delivers not just symbolism but substance.
If the opening day was a statement of intent, Kuala Lumpur now has to prove that ASEAN can transform its newfound prominence into lasting peace and prosperity. – TNS NEWS
