PUTRAJAYA, May 2 – Malaysia and Kosovo have marked a new high in their diplomatic journey with the historic state visit of President Dr Vjosa Osmani Sadriu and the official opening of the Republic of Kosovo’s embassy in Kuala Lumpur — a move Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim described as a “diplomatic milestone” that strengthens a bond forged through resilience, respect, and shared global values.
Welcoming the Kosovan leader and her delegation in Putrajaya, Anwar said the visit — President Osmani Sadriu’s first to Malaysia since assuming office in 2021 — reflects the long-standing friendship between the two nations and opens a new chapter of bilateral cooperation.

“This official visit marks a historic moment, as Malaysia was among the earliest countries to recognise Kosovo as a sovereign and independent state. We have followed closely the course of Kosovo’s struggle and remain in awe of the resilience shown by its people in the face of atrocities and oppression,”
Embassy Opens in Kuala Lumpur
In conjunction with the visit, Kosovo officially inaugurated its embassy in Malaysia on May 2. Anwar congratulated the government and people of Kosovo on this diplomatic advancement, calling it a “significant step that will strengthen bilateral ties and unlock greater opportunities for cooperation in investment, trade, education, culture, tourism, the halal sector, and more.”
He noted that Malaysia’s internationally recognised halal certification system could enable Kosovo to access broader markets and strengthen its economic position across the Muslim world.
“We warmly welcome Kosovo’s decision to open an embassy in Kuala Lumpur,” he added. “It is a symbol of enduring friendship and our shared future.”
Anwar Receives Kosovo’s Highest Civilian Honour
In a separate ceremony earlier in the day, President Osmani Sadriu conferred on Prime Minister Anwar the Order of Independence, the Republic of Kosovo’s highest civilian honour. The award recognises individuals who have played a significant role in supporting Kosovo’s independence and post-independence development.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the honour also recognises Anwar’s steadfast commitment to strengthening bilateral ties between both nations. He joins a distinguished list of global statesmen who have received the award, including Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (UAE), George W. Bush (USA), Micheline Calmy-Rey (Switzerland), and Anne Marie Lizin (Belgium).

In a touching gesture of historical continuity, Kosovo will also posthumously confer the Order of Independence on the late Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, former Prime Minister of Malaysia. Under Tun Abdullah’s leadership, Malaysia was one of the earliest countries to recognise Kosovo’s sovereignty, doing so on 30 October 2008.
Robust Bilateral Dialogue and Global Advocacy
During their official discussions, both leaders engaged in what Anwar described as a “constructive bilateral dialogue” covering trade, investment, education, and people-to-people ties.
“We also found common ground on a range of international issues of shared concern, including the plight of the Palestinian people and the pursuit of global peace,” he added.

At the joint press conference with President Osmani Sadriu, Anwar reaffirmed that Malaysia–Kosovo relations were “not merely a matter of ordinary diplomacy, but a reflection of Malaysia’s deep and genuine friendship with the people of Kosovo.”
He also reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to “expedite and further enhance our economic relations, investment collaboration, and strategic programmes.”
A Display of Cultural Diplomacy
Following official discussions, Anwar hosted a luncheon in honour of the visiting leader and her delegation at the Seri Perdana Complex. Guests were treated to a colourful showcase of Malaysian culture, including traditional dance performances.

Young students from Sekolah Kebangsaan Presint 8 (3) added a special touch to the event, extending a heartfelt welcome that reflected the warmth and hospitality Malaysia is known for.
“Their spirited efforts beautifully illustrated the genuine warmth Malaysians extend to friends from around the world,” Anwar remarked.
Strengthening a Shared Future
Looking Ahead: A Strategic Future
As Malaysia continues to expand its outreach to new partners in Southeast Europe and beyond, the visit by President Osmani Sadriu and the establishment of Kosovo’s diplomatic mission in Kuala Lumpur symbolise a shared commitment to peace, prosperity, and deeper integration.
“We sincerely hope that the strong bonds between Malaysia and Kosovo will continue to flourish, bringing lasting prosperity and well-being to both nations and their people,” Anwar said.
President Osmani Sadriu’s official visit continues through the weekend, with further meetings scheduled with key Malaysian officials, business leaders, and civil society groups.
