Kota Kinabalu, Nov 29 — Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) emerged as the largest bloc in the 17th Sabah State Election, winning 29 seats, but fell short of the 37 needed to form a simple majority in the 73-seat assembly.
According to the Election Commission, Warisan secured 25 seats, Barisan Nasional (BN) won six, while independent candidates made a strong showing with 13 victories.
Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor successfully defended Sulaman, while Warisan President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal retained Senallang. UPKO President Datuk Ewon Benedick also held Kadamaian.
The outcome underscores a fragmented political landscape, with independents holding significant influence in determining the next state government. Negotiations and coalition-building are expected in the coming days as parties seek to secure the required majority.
