KUALA LUMPUR, April 15 – Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin today paid heartfelt tribute to the late Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Malaysia’s fifth Prime Minister, during the Ministry of Defence’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2025 open house at Kem KEMENTAH.
In a moving address before thousands of guests, Mohamed Khaled expressed deep sorrow over Tun Abdullah’s passing, recalling his own formative political years under the statesman’s leadership from 2004 to 2009.
“I had the opportunity to serve under him for five years. I knew him not only professionally but also personally,” he said. “His contributions, service, and sacrifices for the nation were immense. I believe Malaysians will always remember and honour his legacy.”
Describing Tun Abdullah—affectionately known as Pak Lah—as a humble and principled leader, Mohamed Khaled noted:
“He was patient, calm, courteous, and never confrontational. He always prioritised the country, the people, and the party above personal interests. Not many leaders in high office step down without triggering political chaos—but that was his character.”
Mohamed Khaled also reminisced about his early Cabinet roles under Pak Lah’s watch.
“I still remember being appointed as Minister of Entrepreneur and Co-operative Development. He always offered encouragement and support, especially on issues related to Bumiputera development and education. I later served briefly as Minister of Higher Education before he stepped down,” he said.
Switching gears to current affairs, Mohamed Khaled dismissed speculation that Chinese President Xi Jinping’s upcoming visit was linked to rising U.S.-China tariff tensions.
“Let me make it clear—this visit was planned well in advance. It has nothing to do with the U.S. tariff issue. That said, given the timing, it’s natural that trade will be discussed, hopefully leading to win-win outcomes for both nations,” he said.
The Ministry of Defence’s Aidilfitri celebration drew more than 9,000 attendees, including ministry staff, Malaysian Armed Forces personnel, Cabinet members, foreign diplomats, and local community leaders.
The event also saw the presentation of special aid to asnaf, single mothers, persons with disabilities, and children of veterans pursuing higher education—reflecting the Ministry’s continued commitment to inclusive welfare.
