KUALA LUMPUR, April 15 – Malaysia is ready to deploy a military medical team to Myanmar in the aftermath of the devastating 7.9 magnitude earthquake that struck central regions of the country on March 28—but is awaiting final clearance from the Myanmar authorities.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said today that the Malaysian Armed Forces had completed all necessary preparations, including setting up a field hospital, and were ready to move as soon as permission is granted.
“We are only waiting for Myanmar authorities to give the green light on where to set up the field hospitals,” he told reporters at the Ministry of Defence’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration at Kem KEMENTAH.
He added that the government had agreed to bear all costs related to the mission, including logistics and operations.
The mission will involve 35 military medical officers, with deployment expected to begin as soon as the location is confirmed by Myanmar. The team will provide emergency medical services and humanitarian support to affected communities.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan had earlier disclosed the government’s plans during his Hari Raya open house on Saturday, describing it as part of a broader aid initiative in response to the earthquake.
Malaysia’s humanitarian outreach comes as the country prepares to take on the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, underscoring its ongoing commitment to regional solidarity and disaster response.
The Ministry of Defence’s open house, which hosted more than 9,000 guests, also included contributions to asnaf, single mothers, persons with disabilities, and children of military veterans pursuing higher education.
