For history lovers, it is a chance to rediscover a remarkable chapter of Terengganu’s past. For the descendants of Sultan Zainal Abidin III, it is an opportunity to gather and remember a beloved ancestor whose legacy continues across generations.

Tawarikh Sultan Zainal Abidin III, a royal musical theatre production, opens to the public tonight, October 12, 2026, at 9pm, at Dewan Kenanga, Terengganu Equestrian Resort (TER). A second performance takes place tomorrow, October 13, at the same time and venue.

Admission is free, and audiences are encouraged to arrive early to secure seats. The production is organised by the Terengganu State Museum Board together with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia.

Featuring a script by Ali Jusoh, direction by Marzuki Ali and a special appearance by Wan Hanafi Su, the performance brings the late Sultan’s story to a new generation.

The son of Sultan Ahmad II and Tengku Kalsom, Sultan Zainal Abidin III was Terengganu’s 11th Sultan, ruling from 1881 to 1918, almost 37 years.

His reign is remembered for his devotion to Islam, respect for knowledge and concern for his people. He supported education, economic progress and administrative reform while navigating growing pressure from foreign powers.

One of his most enduring contributions was Terengganu’s first written constitution, Undang-Undang Bagi Diri Kerajaan Terengganu, also known as Itqan Al-Muluk Bi Ta‘dil Al-Suluk. Enacted on November 2, 1911, it strengthened the foundations of the state’s government.

His legacy continued through his children. Three sons later became Sultan of Terengganu: Sultan Muhammad II, Sultan Sulaiman Badrul Alam Shah and Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah. His daughters included Tengku Ngah Aisah, Tengku Nik Maimunah and Tengku Nila Puri Tengku Dalam Halimah.

For family members, the invitation carries a special warmth: come together to remember our beloved Tokki, TokNyang and TokNyuk, share his story with our children and grandchildren, and renew the bonds that connect us.

As 2026 marks 108 years since the year of his passing, this gathering offers a meaningful way to honour both his place in history and his place in the family’s hearts.

May all his descendants be able to attend and remember Almarhum together, with love, gratitude and prayer.

Al-Fatihah. May Allah SWT shower His mercy upon Almarhum Sultan Zainal Abidin III, forgive him and grant him a place among His righteous servants. Aamiin.
