Kuala Lumpur, Oct 26 — Malaysia welcomed United States President Donald Trump with full diplomatic honours as he arrived for the 47th ASEAN Summit, marking the first US presidential visit in a decade and reinforcing Malaysia’s role as a regional leader in Southeast Asia.
The American delegation landed at KLIA’s Bunga Raya Complex at 9.54am, where Trump was greeted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and senior cabinet members. A traditional zapin dance was performed on the tarmac, with Trump applauding and briefly joining in, drawing smiles from the crowd and praise from summit organisers.
The visit was widely seen as a boost to Malaysia’s international profile, with government officials highlighting the importance of US–ASEAN cooperation. Discussions focused on trade, defence, and regional stability, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strategic partnerships.
Business leaders expressed optimism over renewed investor confidence, citing Malaysia’s stable leadership and proactive diplomacy. The summit also celebrated Timor-Leste’s formal admission into ASEAN, a milestone supported by all member states.
Security arrangements across Kuala Lumpur were smooth and unobtrusive, allowing the summit to proceed without incident. Public sentiment leaned positive, with many Malaysians proud of the country’s ability to host world leaders with professionalism and cultural grace.
Trump is expected to continue his Asia tour with stops in Japan and South Korea following his engagements in Malaysia.
