Kuala Lumpur, Jan 15— Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim held a meeting with Dato’ Yusof Haslam, Executive Chairman of Skop Productions and one of Malaysia’s most prominent film directors and producers, to discuss the development and future direction of the local film industry. The meeting touched on challenges and opportunities in the creative sector, including the issue of entertainment tax, which Anwar said would be reviewed and discussed further with state governments.

Anwar expressed appreciation for Yusof Haslam’s film Sheriff: Narko Integriti, which addressed themes of corruption and integrity. He noted that such works contribute meaningfully to public discourse and reflect the role of cinema in shaping values. “I value the support of artists in upholding openness and freedom of expression. The MADANI Government will continue to ensure artistic freedom is preserved so that creators can produce bolder, higher‑quality and more meaningful works for society and the nation,” Anwar said.

The meeting underscored the government’s commitment to supporting Malaysia’s creative industry, balancing regulatory issues such as taxation with the need to empower filmmakers and artists. Industry observers say the dialogue reflects a broader effort to strengthen collaboration between policymakers and creative professionals, ensuring the sector remains vibrant and competitive in the face of global trends.
