Singapore, July 30 – During an interview with Channel News Asia (CNA), Fahmi Fadzil, the Malaysian Minister of Communications and Digital, raised alarming concerns over the significant financial losses and rising cyberbullying cases affecting Malaysians.
“More than RM1 billion of Malaysian public funds disappeared due to scams on various social media platforms last year. Meanwhile, for cyberbullying, no less than 10 cases are reported daily. This is not a matter to be taken lightly. “These figures are very alarming,” said Fahmi.
He further highlighted that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) announced the need for social media and internet messaging services with at least eight million registered users in Malaysia to be held accountable for criminal activities occurring on their platforms under a new regulatory framework.
“We cannot remain silent and allow more Malaysians to fall victim to cybercrime. Combating online crime is a focus for regional countries. God willing, ASEAN will work together to review a stricter regulatory framework to ensure a safer internet ecosystem for children and families,” added Fahmi.
