PETALING JAYA , Aug 3 – Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo has called on Malaysians to embrace digitalisation as an essential part of modern life while remaining alert to the risks of online scams and misinformation.
Speaking to TNS News during the Karnival Kita MADANI Peringkat Negeri Selangor, Gobind described digital tools as vital enablers for empowerment—but warned that they must be used responsibly.
“We all know we’re moving towards a more digitally focused nation,” he said. “That means teaching people how to use digital platforms. These tools help us—but they also come with risks.”
The minister urged Malaysians to build digital literacy and awareness, noting that many scams and online threats can be avoided with proper knowledge and caution.
“There’s no choice—you must learn to adopt,” he added. “Use the tools carefully and understand how they benefit you. But at the same time, be cautious so you don’t fall victim to scams and other problems we see online.”

Empowering Communities Through Access and Education
The two-day carnival, held at Dataran Terbuka Kampung Kayu Ara, Damansara, was organised by the Selangor branch of the Department of Information Malaysia (JAPEN) in collaboration with the Damansara Parliamentary Service Centre and multiple government agencies.
Designed to bring the MADANI Government’s policies closer to the people, the carnival also served as a platform to promote digital literacy, highlight public services, and foster community engagement.
One of the key highlights was the ‘Safe Internet’ campaign, conducted in collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), aimed at raising public awareness and understanding of cybersecurity risks and best practices.
“This is about empowering people to use the Internet wisely and protect themselves online,” Gobind said.

During the opening ceremony, Gobind—who also serves as Member of Parliament for Damansara—announced the successful outcome of a collaboration between Axiata and his service centre. Fifty laptops were handed over to selected students from B40 families, a move aimed at closing the digital divide.

Gobind Singh Deo presents laptops to recipients from B40 families, sponsored by Axiata, during the Selangor MADANI Carnival in Kayu Ara as part of a digital inclusion initiative.
“This initiative empowers families by providing Internet access and online learning opportunities,” he said. “I would like to thank Axiata and especially Mr. Suresh Singh from my team for making this possible.”
He noted that beyond device access, the real value lies in opening pathways to knowledge and opportunity, particularly for children and youth in underprivileged households.
Strong Community Turnout and Support
The carnival drew over 500 attendees, including local residents, grassroots leaders, and civil society organisations. Activities included movie screenings (wayang pacak), Jualan Ehsan Rahmah (subsidised sales), talent competitions, food truck bazaars, and interactive booths by government departments and telco companies.

Also present were Rubaayah Osman, Deputy Director-General (Strategic Communications) of JAPEN, and Cik Kazidi Mohd Zainuddin, Director of JAPEN Selangor.
Gobind described the event as a success and praised the energy of participants.
“The turnout here has been fantastic. People are engaged, curious, and willing to learn,” he said. “This is how we build a connected and secure MADANI society.”

Continuing the Commitment
Gobind concluded by reaffirming his dedication to serving the people of Damansara and Malaysia in his dual capacity as Minister of Digital and Member of Parliament.
“As Minister and MP, I remain committed to ensuring that all citizens—especially those in the B40 group—are not left behind in the digital journey.” – TNS NEWS
