Kuala Lumpur, Oct 28 — Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) confirmed another breakdown of the KLIA Aerotrain this morning, marking the 20th reported incident since July. The disruption, which occurred at Terminal 1, has been traced to power system faults managed by contractors IJM-PESTEC Joint Venture (IPJV), with Alstom also involved in the ongoing review.
In a statement, MAHB said it is awaiting full reports from both contractors regarding today’s incident and the earlier failure on October 15. “Dedicated resources have been deployed and contractors are now stationed on-site around the clock to ensure seamless passenger movements,” the airport operator said.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke has instructed the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) to oversee corrective actions and ensure compliance with safety protocols. “We will not tolerate repeated disruptions. MAHB must act decisively,” he said.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah previously revealed that the Aerotrain system experienced 19 incidents between July 2 and September 30, ranging from signalling failures to passengers forcing open train doors. Several of these incidents required passengers to be escorted manually to the terminal.
Despite the technical setbacks, MAHB said KLIA operations remained fully functional during the recent ASEAN Summit, which saw over 530,000 passenger movements and 3,400 flights.
