KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28, 2025 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim brought the 47th ASEAN Summit to a close on Tuesday, formally handing over the ASEAN Chairmanship to the Philippines while urging the bloc to remain steadfast in the face of global turbulence.

Reflecting on Malaysia’s year as chair, Anwar said ASEAN had proven that “its machinery, when guided by patience and reason, still works.” He acknowledged that not every crisis could be resolved within a single chairmanship, but stressed that history bends toward justice through the courage and persistence of those who refuse despair.

“Some crises will persist; some lives remain shadowed by fear and want. Yet history seldom leaps. It bends, slowly, through the will, labour and sheer stubbornness of those who refuse despair,” he said.

Unity Amid Challenges

In remarks laced with literary references, Anwar quoted Shakespeare’s warning against being “passion’s slave” and called for ASEAN to be governed by reason rather than frenzy. He also evoked the famous line from W.B. Yeats, declaring that “things are not falling apart and the centre still holds,” underscoring ASEAN’s continued centrality despite external pressures and internal differences.

The Malaysian leader noted that during the year-long chairmanship, ASEAN revived dialogues, built new bridges, and maintained unity even when confronted with disagreements. “Even where we have faced differences and debates, we have remained whole,” he said.

Handing Over to the Philippines

As he passed the baton to Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Anwar expressed confidence in Manila’s ability to lead ASEAN into its next chapter with “clarity, composure, and that warmth and poise for which the Filipino people are known.”

Quoting Filipino national hero José Rizal, Anwar reminded delegates that “it is a useless life that is not consecrated to a great ideal. It is like a stone wasted on the field without becoming part of any edifice.”

Tribute to Malaysians

Anwar also paid tribute to the people of Malaysia, thanking officials, volunteers, and citizens for their dedication and hospitality throughout the summit year. “In your hands, duty became service, and service became love of country. In the eyes of the world, you have shown the best of Malaysia,” he said.

He closed by declaring the summit officially concluded: “With that, I declare the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits closed.”

Looking Ahead

With the Philippines assuming the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2026, the bloc enters a new chapter amid ongoing regional challenges — from conflict in Myanmar to shifting global economic currents. Yet Anwar’s parting words emphasized ASEAN’s enduring strength: reason, patience, and unity at its core. – TNS NEWS
