Malaysia This Week: Fuel Subsidies, MACC Pressure and a Heatwave Test the System

Edition 2 | Week of 22–29 March 2026 | TNS News

The week of 22–29 March 2026 will be remembered as one in which Malaysia’s domestic politics grew more complicated, its fiscal position more pressured, and its people more tested by the elements.

Three separate crises — a governance vacuum at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), a fuel subsidy system straining under the weight of a Middle East conflict, and an unrelenting northern heatwave — unfolded simultaneously, while the political class oscillated between genuine drama and manufactured noise.

This was the week that was.

Nurul Izzah resignation rumour goes viral — PKR calls it fake news

Saturday morning briefly saw Malaysia’s political conversation consumed by viral social media claims that PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar had resigned from her post effective 1 April.

The rumour originated from a report by Tamil-language portal Makkal Osai, which was later removed, but not before it spread rapidly across WhatsApp groups and social media platforms. The speculation prompted calls for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to clarify his daughter’s political status.

PKR moved quickly to contain the narrative. Information chief Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, party secretary-general Dr Fuziah Salleh and Nurul Izzah herself all dismissed the claim as “fake news”. No resignation letter or official confirmation has surfaced.

Still, the episode has revived scrutiny of PKR’s internal dynamics ahead of GE16, particularly against the backdrop of the unresolved 2016 Washington lobbying controversy and lingering tensions from the party’s divisive elections last year.

Khairy’s UMNO return: Supreme Council to decide April 17

The question of whether former Umno Youth chief and health minister Khairy Jamaluddin will be readmitted to Umno now has a timeline.

Umno vice-president and defence minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin confirmed that applications from several expelled or suspended leaders — including Khairy and former Sembrong MP Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein — will be tabled at the Umno Supreme Council meeting on 17 April.

Khairy was expelled in January 2023 following GE15 after contesting a seat against Barisan Nasional’s official candidate.

He formally submitted his appeal to party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on 16 March under the Rumah Bangsa reconciliation initiative, which Zahid described as a Ramadan gesture of unity, declaring that “Umno’s doors remain open”.

While a decision is not guaranteed at the April meeting, the trajectory of the discussion appears increasingly favourable.

The MACC crisis: Cabinet silent as pressure mounts on Azam Baki

Malaysia’s anti-corruption establishment remained under intense scrutiny this week as the government declined to publish the findings of a special probe into MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki’s shareholding controversy.

Communications minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil confirmed on 11 March that the Cabinet had received and discussed the Attorney-General-led committee’s report but said the next step rests with the Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.

No findings have been released publicly.

The controversy stems from Bloomberg’s February report that Azam held approximately 17.7 million shares in Velocity Capital Partners Bhd, valued at roughly RM800,000 — significantly exceeding the RM100,000 shareholding limit for civil servants set out in a 2024 circular.

Azam has denied wrongdoing and filed a RM100 million defamation suit against Bloomberg LP.

Civil society groups have intensified pressure. The Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4 Centre) described the investigation as structurally flawed, arguing that both the MACC and the review committee ultimately report to the Prime Minister’s Office.

MCA Youth has called for a Royal Commission of Inquiry and for the MACC to be placed under parliamentary oversight.

Azam’s contract expires 12 May 2026, and multiple reports suggest renewal is increasingly unlikely.

ECONOMY

Pump pain: Government cuts RON95 subsidy quota

Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the monthly subsidised RON95 petrol quota under the Budi Madani programme will be reduced from 300 litres to 200 litres per citizen, effective 1 April 2026.

The subsidised price remains RM1.99 per litre.

The move reflects mounting fiscal pressure as global oil prices surge amid the US-Israel war on Iran.

Brent crude has exceeded US$100 per barrel — far above the US$65 assumption used in Budget 2026 — pushing Malaysia’s monthly fuel subsidy bill to around RM4 billion, nearly six times the pre-crisis level of roughly RM700 million.

Government data suggests about 90 percent of motorists consume less than 200 litres per month, meaning most drivers will not be directly affected.

E-hailing and gig-economy drivers retain a higher quota of 800 litres monthly.

Anwar also confirmed that a Malaysian oil tanker and its crew successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz following diplomatic engagement with Tehran — a rare positive development amid the disruption to global shipping lanes.

SOCIETY

Heatwave bites the north

Northern Malaysia is experiencing an intense dry spell, with Perlis, four districts in Kedah and Hulu Perak under Level 2 heatwave alerts as of 27 March.

Level 2 is declared when maximum daily temperatures reach 37–40°C for at least three consecutive days.

Thirteen additional areas across Kedah, Penang and Perak are under Level 1 alerts.

MetMalaysia deputy director-general Ambun Dindang said the heat is expected to persist until the Southwest Monsoon begins in June.

Some parts of Kedah have recorded 17 consecutive rainless days, while Perlis experienced 15 days without rainfall as of 23 March.

Schools in affected areas have suspended outdoor activities and may shift temporarily to home-based learning if conditions worsen.

#BellaSyedYes: Syed Saddiq and Bella Astillah engaged

Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman announced his engagement to actress Bella Astillah on 28 March, with the proposal taking place atop Mount Kinabalu during heavy rain.

His post — “I asked, she said yes. This is not the end of the story — it’s our beginning” — quickly went viral, generating more than one million views within hours.

The engagement ceremony was held the same day.

Syed Saddiq’s hantaran gifts included savings accounts under Amanah Saham Nasional Berhad, Tabung Haji and Skim Simpanan Pendidikan Nasional for Bella’s children.

Bella’s seven trays were themed around Mount Kinabalu, reflecting the location of the proposal.

The couple’s relationship began during a 2024 charity collaboration that raised more than RM6 million for Syed Saddiq’s Muar constituency.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim joined the national celebration with a light-hearted message:
Tahniah, kad jemputan jangan lupa.

UNTIL NEXT WEEK

Malaysia enters the coming week carrying the weight of unresolved questions: a governance controversy surrounding the MACC, a subsidy restructuring that will test both policy and public patience, and a diplomatic clock ticking in Washington that could move oil markets once again.

Against that backdrop, a former Umno heavyweight awaits a party verdict, a ruling party deputy president brushes off rumours of her exit, and the north braces for another week of dry skies.

Malaysia has rarely faced so many moving parts at once.
