Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim warns the killing of Iranian leaders including Ali Khamenei risks plunging West Asia into prolonged instability after speaking with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan amid escalating regional attacks.

KUALA LUMPUR, Mar 6 – Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has expressed Malaysia’s solidarity with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and called for urgent restraint among global powers as tensions across West Asia escalate following a series of attacks linked to the widening conflict between the United States and Iran.
In a statement posted on his official social media platforms late Thursday, Anwar said he had spoken with the Turkish president to exchange views on the rapidly deteriorating security situation in the region.
“Last night I spoke with President Erdoğan to exchange views on the increasingly grave developments in West Asia following a series of attacks that are threatening the stability of the region,” he said.
Anwar also conveyed Malaysia’s solidarity with Türkiye after a ballistic missile was reported to have headed towards Turkish airspace — an incident he described as a stark reminder of the fragile security environment now gripping the region.
“This development underscores just how fragile the region’s security environment has become,” the Prime Minister said.
Concern Over Killing of Iranian Leadership
The Malaysian leader also addressed the assassination of several senior Iranian figures, including Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, warning that the development could plunge the region into prolonged instability.
“Such developments risk pushing West Asia into a period of serious and prolonged instability,” Anwar said.
He added that both leaders agreed that all parties involved must demonstrate the “utmost restraint and wisdom” to prevent the crisis from spiralling into a wider regional confrontation.
The Prime Minister also praised Erdoğan’s diplomatic role in attempting to mediate between Washington and Tehran.
“I expressed appreciation for President Erdoğan’s role as a voice of conscience for the Muslim world, including Türkiye’s efforts to serve as an intermediary between Washington and Tehran in opening space for dialogue and a diplomatic resolution,” he said.
Escalating Iran–US Conflict
The call comes as tensions between Iran and the United States intensify following a series of coordinated strikes across the region that have dramatically raised the risk of a broader Middle East conflict.

The Strait of Hormuz carries roughly one-fifth of global oil trade, making it one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints as tensions rise in West Asia
In recent days, the United States alongside Israeli forces has launched multiple military strikes targeting Iranian military infrastructure and strategic sites. Tehran has responded with missile and drone attacks directed at US-linked military facilities and allied positions across the region.
The situation escalated sharply after reports confirmed the killing of several senior Iranian figures, including Khamenei, in a series of attacks that analysts say could trigger a leadership crisis inside the Islamic Republic.
Iran has since vowed retaliation, raising fears that key regional transit corridors including the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of global oil trade passes could become flashpoints.
Energy markets, global shipping routes and aviation networks are already bracing for disruption as security risks across West Asia continue to widen.
Malaysia Calls for Diplomacy
Against this backdrop, Anwar stressed that diplomatic engagement must take precedence over military escalation.
“Malaysia calls on all parties to de-escalate tensions and halt attacks that risk triggering wider instability beyond West Asia,” he said.
“Dialogue and diplomacy must remain the primary pathway forward.”
Position on Palestine
The Prime Minister also raised the issue of Palestine during his discussion with Erdoğan, reiterating Malaysia’s longstanding position on Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied territories.
Anwar expressed appreciation for Türkiye and other countries that have condemned Israel’s decision to expand illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank.
“Malaysia’s position is clear that such actions by the Zionist regime constitute a violation of international law,” he said.
A Region at the Edge
The conversation between Kuala Lumpur and Ankara highlights growing concern among Muslim-majority nations that the conflict could expand beyond its current theatre.
With ballistic missile activity, targeted assassinations of senior leadership figures, and intensifying military exchanges, analysts warn the region may be entering its most volatile phase in years.
For countries such as Malaysia, the immediate challenge lies not only in diplomatic positioning but also in managing the wider economic consequences of prolonged instability in one of the world’s most strategically critical regions.
