KUALA LUMPUR, June 28, 2024 – The Malaysian Olympic Council (MOM) has proactively addressed the controversy surrounding the official attire design of the Malaysian Contingent and its launch event at The Exchange (TRX), in conjunction with the celebration of World Olympic Day on June 23, 2024.
In response to public feedback, OCM has announced plans to revamp the official uniforms for the national team ahead of the Paris Olympics.
In a statement, MOM President Tan Seri Datuk Dr. Mohamad Norza Zakaria acknowledged the confusion that occurred and took full responsibility for the issue.
He emphasized that Yonex, as the official apparel sponsor since 2014, will continue to collaborate with MOM to produce designs that reflect the spirit and aspirations of Malaysian athletes.
“We appreciate the feedback received from all parties, including athletes, which indicates the need for a renewal in the official attire design,” said Mohamad Norza. “This is an important step in ensuring that our official attire reflects the excellence and aspirations of the Malaysian Contingent.”
MOM also clarified that the logo used is not a modified Malaysian flag, but part of the MOM logo that includes the fluttering Malaysian flag along with the five Olympic rings, in line with the guidelines of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
In an effort to honor the Jalur Gemilang, MOM has decided to improve the existing design with a clearer Tiger motif and a colored MOM logo. Discussions with Yonex will be held to ensure that future designs symbolize the nation’s status and meet the expectations of the Malaysian people.
“We thank all stakeholders and sports fans who have provided constructive feedback,” said Mohamad Norza.
“We hope that all Malaysians will continue to support the Malaysian Contingent with the same spirit as shown in providing feedback on the official attire.”
“MOM, as a non-governmental, non-profit body recognized by the IOC, is committed to ensuring transparency and openness in all its actions. With these changes, MOM hopes to bring home Malaysia’s first gold at the upcoming Olympic Games,” he added..
