Kuala Lumpur, Jan 14 – In a recent statement, Minister of National Unity, YB Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, expressed deep disappointment and strong condemnation for a statement made by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. The former prime minister alleged that “the Indian community in Malaysia is still not fully loyal to this country because they are still bound to their home country.”

Aaron emphasized Mahathir’s role as a stateman who should be an agent of national unity, contributing to the building of the nation. He stressed the importance of unity through the Social Contract, the foundation on which Malaysia gained independence. “To unite the diverse population of different races, religions, ethnicities, and cultures in this country, our forefathers supported a framework of national integration rather than assimilation,” Aaron said.

The Minister called on all segments of society, including political leaders, not to make statements touching upon the sensitivity of religion and race, as it could generate hatred. “Political leaders should serve as role models in fostering values of unity, tolerance, and a spirit of togetherness,” he urged.

Highlighting the significance of historical events, Aaron emphasized that Malaysia, even after more than 60 years of independence, continues to uphold the value of ‘Unity in Diversity’ as a way of life. “Remember, diversity is an asset and strength,” he added.

As the nation reflects on its historical journey, Aaron urged everyone to draw lessons from the past to ensure the continuity of unity and harmony among different ethnic groups. “We must learn, understand, and draw lessons from the historical events that Malaysia has gone through so that the unity and harmony among different ethnic groups that we currently experience can continue to be enjoyed.”

In conclusion, Aaron reiterated the call for unity and tolerance, emphasizing that diversity is a strength that should be celebrated in Malaysia.
