KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 5 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the need for Government-Linked Companies (GLCs) to be empathetic and responsive to the hardships faced by businesses and the public in light of the recent floods.
Chairing the Board of Trustees meeting of Yayasan Pelaburan Bumiputera (YPB) today, the Prime Minister highlighted the challenges posed by the floods, which have significantly impacted traders and residents.
“I have stressed that GLCs must be sensitive to the burdens borne by businesses and the public, especially regarding facilities related to building rental payments and financial loan repayments,” Anwar stated in a Facebook post.
The recent floods, caused by continuous heavy rainfall over several days, have affected multiple states, displacing thousands and causing significant damage to homes, infrastructure, and businesses. Kelantan, Terengganu, and parts of Pahang were among the worst-hit, with low-lying areas submerged under water.
According to reports, hundreds of small traders in these areas have suffered losses as floodwaters destroyed inventories and damaged shopfronts. Families have also faced disruptions, with some seeking shelter at temporary relief centers. The aftermath of the floods continues to strain local economies, heightening the need for swift and effective support from both government and private sectors.
During the YPB meeting, the progress of affiliated companies in supporting government initiatives was also discussed. Key programs, such as GEAR-uP—designed to empower Bumiputera entrepreneurs—and the resolutions of the Bumiputera Economic Congress, were reviewed for alignment with the government’s socioeconomic agenda.
The Prime Minister’s call for GLCs to ease burdens, particularly by offering flexibility in rental payments and financial loan repayments, reflects a broader strategy to provide immediate relief while fostering resilience among affected communities.
This proactive stance by the Prime Minister underscores the importance of a unified effort among GLCs and related entities in mitigating the impacts of natural disasters, supporting affected communities, and advancing the government’s development goals.
