PUTRAJAYA, April 14 – The President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, is set to embark on a landmark state visit to Malaysia from April 15 to 17, 2025, at the invitation of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia. The visit is part of President Xi’s first overseas tour in 2025 and signifies a renewed commitment to deepening Malaysia-China relations and regional cooperation under Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship.
President Xi will be accompanied by senior Chinese officials and will be accorded a full state welcoming ceremony, including an audience with His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim at Istana Negara. A state banquet will also be hosted in honour of the Chinese leader and his delegation.
The upcoming visit carries strong symbolic and strategic significance as it comes on the heels of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China, established on 31 May 1974. Both nations elevated their diplomatic engagement to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2013, during President Xi’s last state visit to Malaysia.
During the visit, President Xi is also scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim to discuss a wide range of bilateral, regional, and international issues. The two leaders will witness the signing of Memoranda of Understanding, Agreements, and Notes between Malaysia and China, cementing future collaboration. An official dinner at Seri Perdana Complex will also be hosted by the Prime Minister in Xi’s honour.

“As Chair of ASEAN and Country Coordinator for ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations, Malaysia remains committed to advancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between ASEAN and China through dialogue, mutual trust, and tangible initiatives that benefit the peoples of ASEAN and China,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in the statement.
China has remained Malaysia’s largest trading partner for 16 consecutive years since 2009. In 2024, total trade between both countries reached RM484.12 billion, accounting for 16.8 percent of Malaysia’s total global trade (RM2.879 trillion).
President Xi’s visit underscores not only the strong bilateral ties between the two nations but also Malaysia’s pivotal role in driving regional cooperation as ASEAN Chair in 2025.
