KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 19 – Ever so often, the Malaysian populace finds itself inundated with a deluge of news and issues that evoke feelings of disbelief, disgust, and frustration.
Former International Trade and Industry Minister Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz has expressed her concern over the impact of such discordant narratives on the nation’s social fabric, lamenting the unnecessary bad blood, debates, and polarisation they bring.
In a bold proposition for national unity, Rafidah questions the persisting negative influences that sow seeds of discord. Instead of perpetuating debates solely centered around the “Bumiputera and Non-Bumiputera” policy track, she advocates for a truly national platform – a “Kongress Pembangunan Malaysia” that transcends racial boundaries.
In a posting on her social media, the envisioned congress, as she proposes, would gather experts from diverse races leading discussions on the path forward for Malaysia’s socio-economic development.
The focus would shift towards competence, skills, and meritocracy, encouraging Malaysians to contribute irrespective of their racial background.
She advocates for discussions that garner inputs from organisations contributing positively to national objectives, with a key emphasis on shared national interests rather than segmented racial groups.
The goal is to formulate a realistic new vision for Malaysia that centers upon the common interests of a united Malaysian people.
Rafidah believes that leaving a precious legacy to the youth involves moving away from divisive racial elements.
She stresses the need for Malaysia to adapt to the increasingly challenging regional and global environments, emphasizing that the nation cannot afford to lag behind due to a discordant social environment and fragmented politics.
In her call for political stability, Rafidah Aziz underscores the importance of alliances based on shared political philosophies rather than mere convenience. She urges a resynchronization of the national compass, discarding policy measures that are no longer relevant to nation-building in today’s challenging world.
The overarching message is clear: Malaysia must unite in solidarity, leaving behind the negative “we and they” approach to governance. Rafidah Aziz concludes with the aspirational call, “Sejahtera dan Maju Malaysia Kita” – Prosperous and Progressive, Our Malaysia.
