Subang, July 31 – After 22 years, Subang Airport is set to resume jet operations, announced Anthony Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport. The decision to redevelop Subang as a City Airport comes after thorough preparations and cooperation from all stakeholders, aiming to alleviate the capacity strain on Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
“We have reviewed the conditions and preparations made by MAHB, and overall, I believe they have made thorough preparations. I think many are waiting for the return of jet operations. We have received excellent cooperation from all stakeholders. Immigration has added more counters and personnel to serve at Subang Airport,” said Loke.
For the terminal operators, the security staff has also increased to ensure smooth passenger movement. This interim phase is expected to last two to three years. More importantly, we want to build a new terminal and enhance the capacity of the Subang Sky Park terminal.
When I presented the Cabinet paper last year and made the announcement, there were two decisions made by the Cabinet.
Firstly, to restore jet operations here. When KLIA opened in 1998, all jet operations were moved to KLIA in 2002. After 22 years, KLIA has reached a point where its capacity is full. Terminal 1, with a capacity of 25 million, is over capacity.
KLIA 2 also has a significant number of passengers. So we are not worried about cannibalization at KLIA. That is why we are confident that there is room to reopen Subang for jet operations.
Secondly, we aim to redevelop this airport as a city airport and an aviation ecosystem. It is not just for the airport, but the surrounding area will also develop the MRO sector and have a drone testing area, among other things. There are several important components that we will continue to develop.
The terminal building is a very important component, capable of accommodating up to 8 million passengers a year. “So, I am pleased to announce that Subang Airport is ready for jet operations, which will undoubtedly breathe new life into our country’s aviation sector,” Loke added.
