KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 23 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has lauded the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) landmark decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, calling it a “monumental victory for all who champion justice and humanity.”

In a Facebook post, Anwar described the move as a significant step in upholding human rights and international law. “The International Criminal Court’s decision to issue arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant marks a monumental victory for all who champion justice and humanity,” he wrote, emphasizing Malaysia’s steadfast support for Palestine.

ICC’s Bold Decision

The ICC announced the arrest warrants following investigations into alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during Israel’s recent military actions in Gaza. The decision comes amid growing global condemnation of Israel’s conduct during the conflict, which has resulted in thousands of civilian casualties, including women and children.

The court has accused Netanyahu and Gallant of authorizing disproportionate military force, targeting civilians, and committing acts that may constitute war crimes under the Rome Statute. Israel, which is not a party to the ICC, has dismissed the ruling as biased and politically motivated, vowing to protect its leaders from international prosecution.

Malaysia’s Consistent Support for Palestine

Malaysia has long been a vocal advocate for Palestinian rights, with Anwar frequently reiterating the country’s unwavering commitment to the cause. Under his administration, Malaysia has strengthened its diplomatic efforts to highlight the plight of Palestinians, including rallying support at international forums such as the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Anwar’s statement reflects Malaysia’s firm stance on international justice and accountability, especially in addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which he has described as a moral and humanitarian crisis.

Background on ICC and Israel-Palestine Conflict

The ICC, established in 2002, serves as a global tribunal to prosecute individuals for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. While Israel is not a signatory to the Rome Statute, the ICC claims jurisdiction over alleged crimes in Palestinian territories based on Palestine’s recognition of the court in 2015.

The ICC’s decision has drawn mixed reactions worldwide. Supporters argue that it is a long-overdue move to hold Israeli leaders accountable for actions in Gaza and the West Bank, while critics fear it may exacerbate tensions in the already volatile region.

Regional and Global Implications

The arrest warrants could have far-reaching consequences for Netanyahu and Gallant, including travel restrictions and potential diplomatic isolation. For Malaysia, the ICC’s decision is likely to bolster its moral authority in advocating for Palestinian rights on the global stage.

As international attention now shifts to the enforcement of the warrants, Anwar’s remarks underline the hope that the ruling will pave the way for greater accountability and justice for Palestinians who have long endured oppression.
