WASHINGTON, July – In a stunning turn of events, President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race in a heartfelt letter to the American people on Sunday.

In a letter on X, Biden, 81, endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee, following calls from congressional Democrats to step aside after a shaky debate performance against Republican challenger Donald Trump, 78.

Biden’s letter highlighted the administration’s achievements over the past three and a half years, including economic growth, healthcare reforms, veteran care, gun safety laws, and climate legislation.

He praised the American people for their resilience and unity in overcoming the pandemic and economic crisis.

Joe Biden: “I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump.”

With Biden’s endorsement, Harris’s path to the nomination becomes clearer, though the Democratic Party must now rally behind her to ensure unity. Harris’s supporters believe she has the strength to defeat Trump, leveraging the successes of the Biden-Harris administration and access to the campaign’s war chest.

Trump has publicly stated that Harris would be easier to defeat than Biden, though some leaks from his camp suggest they preferred facing Biden.

The Democratic Party now faces the task of formally nominating Harris at the convention, requiring agreement from around 4,000 delegates.
