Seremban, Nov 26 — Malaysia should move decisively toward adopting Rapid DNA technology to strengthen disaster victim identification (DVI) capabilities, experts said at a national seminar held on November 25, 2025.
The seminar, hosted by ELMU University’s Centre for Crime Science and Investigation (CSI), highlighted how Rapid DNA can confirm identities in as little as 90 minutes, complementing traditional forensic methods.
Vice Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr. Kassim Noor Mohamed said CSI was established to drive innovation in crime science by enhancing forensic capacity and building world-class partnerships. “Rapid DNA offers a transformative solution that does not replace traditional methods but strengthens them,” he explained.
Deputy Vice Chancellor Dato’ Dr. Yew Chong Hooi emphasized the need for skilled manpower to operate modern forensic systems, while Programme Coordinator Dr. Rabieahtul Abu Bakar stressed the humanitarian importance of faster identification for families.
UK forensic expert Lewis Shaw shared global case studies, noting that Rapid DNA has already supported identity verification, human trafficking investigations, and disaster response overseas. “Its greatest advantage is reducing waiting time for families and lowering logistical burdens,” he said.
CSI Project Director Kurian Thomas concluded that Malaysia should work toward a structured national plan involving inter-agency partnerships, research, and a clear roadmap for adoption.
