KUALA LUMPUR, April 16 – Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Malaysia yesterday for a three-day state visit, marking a significant moment in the 51-year diplomatic relationship between the two nations. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim welcomed President Xi at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, emphasising the importance of the visit in strengthening bilateral ties.
In a statement upon arrival, Xi expressed his hope that the visit would “further deepen the traditional friendship between our two countries, enhance mutual political trust, promote cooperation in modernisation, and jointly foster exchanges and mutual learning among civilisations.”
The visit follows the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations celebrated in 2024 and aims to usher in a new “golden 50 years” of China–Malaysia relations. During his stay, President Xi is scheduled to meet with King Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar and hold discussions with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on bilateral cooperation, as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest.
Malaysia and China have maintained a strong economic partnership, with China serving as Malaysia’s largest trading partner for 16 consecutive years. In 2024, bilateral trade reached an all-time high of US$212.04 billion.
Anwar highlighted the significance of Xi’s visit, stating, “Malaysia is delighted to welcome Xi, especially in our efforts to strengthen the close relationship between our two allied countries.”
The visit is expected to result in the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding and agreements, further enhancing cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
As Malaysia holds the ASEAN Chairmanship for 2025, President Xi’s visit also underscores China’s commitment to deepening ties with ASEAN countries and promoting regional stability and prosperity. ​
