KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 5 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his heartfelt sympathies to the people of Spain following the catastrophic flooding that has claimed hundreds of lives and caused widespread devastation in the Valencia region.

In a Facebook post, Anwar conveyed his condolences and solidarity with the Spanish people during this challenging time.

“I wish to extend my heartfelt sympathies to the people in Spain who have suffered the tragic loss of hundreds of lives as well as widespread devastation in Valencia caused by massive flooding last week.

“The people of Malaysia are with the people of Spain in these most trying times and will continue to pray for their safety and wellbeing with earnest hope that the situation will improve in the days ahead,” Anwar said.

Spain has recently experienced one of its worst flooding events in decades. The disaster struck the eastern region of Valencia, where relentless rainstorms led to flash floods that swept away homes, vehicles, and infrastructure. The flooding, which began in early November, resulted in over 200 fatalities, making it Spain’s deadliest flood disaster in recent memory.

The storms concentrated over the Magro and Turia river basins, producing walls of water that overflowed riverbanks and inundated towns and villages. In some areas, it rained more in eight hours than it had in the preceding 20 months.

The sudden deluge caught many residents off guard, leading to tragic losses as people were trapped in their homes and vehicles.

The Spanish government has mobilized extensive resources to aid in the recovery efforts. Thousands of soldiers, emergency responders, and volunteers are working tirelessly to clear debris, provide essential supplies, and support displaced residents.

Prime Minister Anwar’s message of support reflects the global solidarity with Spain during this crisis. The international community has been quick to offer assistance, with various countries and organizations providing aid and resources to help Spain recover from this devastating event.

As the people of Spain continue to grapple with the aftermath of the floods, the thoughts and prayers of the global community, including Malaysia, remain with them. The hope is that through collective efforts and resilience, Spain will overcome this tragedy and rebuild stronger than before.
