KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 24 – Malaysia has expressed its strong support for Palestine to be accepted as a full member of the United Nations (UN) and called for an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing conflict with Israel.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hassan, personally conveyed the aspirations of the people and the leadership of Malaysia to the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, in New York on January 23, 2024.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that this Malaysian demand aligns with the statement of Guterres at the Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Kampala, Uganda, where he emphasized that the right of Palestinians to establish an independent state cannot be denied.
Anwar also reiterated Malaysia’s position that security and peace can only be achieved and sustained if the rightful rights are restored. He said that if oppression, violence, the deprivation of rights, and apartheid policies are allowed to prevail, there will be no safe haven in life.
“Surely, one day, whether now or in the future, those who are oppressed and denied all rights will rise against such injustice,” he wrote.
Malaysia remains principled in its stance that Palestine has the right to establish an independent and sovereign state based on the pre-1967 borders, with Jerusalem as its capital.
Malaysia has been a vocal advocate for the Palestinian cause and has consistently condemned the Israeli aggression and occupation. Malaysia has also provided humanitarian and development assistance to the Palestinian people.
