Kuala Lumpur, April 11 – The inaugural ASEAN-China Media and Think Tank Forum commenced today in Malaysia’s capital, bringing together over 250 representatives from 160 media organisations, think tanks, and government agencies across Southeast Asia and China. Co-hosted by Malaysia’s national news agency, Bernama, and China’s Xinhua News Agency, the forum aims to enhance dialogue and collaboration between ASEAN and China.
The event, themed “Strengthening ASEAN-China Cooperation,” was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. In his opening address, he emphasised the importance of media and think tanks in fostering mutual understanding and regional stability.
Key topics discussed include promoting civilisational exchanges, advancing maritime Silk Road cooperation, and leveraging artificial intelligence for regional development. The forum also serves as a platform to align media narratives and policy research in support of ASEAN-China relations.
Bernama CEO Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin expressed gratitude for the opportunity to co-host the forum, noting its significance in expanding collaborative networks between Bernama and Xinhua. She highlighted that the event coincides with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s upcoming state visit to Malaysia, underscoring its diplomatic relevance.
The forum builds upon a longstanding partnership between Bernama and Xinhua, which began with a memorandum of agreement signed in December 1985 and was renewed in December 2023 to reinforce bilateral cooperation.
This gathering marks a significant step in deepening ASEAN-China ties through media and intellectual exchange, reflecting a shared commitment to regional integration and mutual prosperity.
