Bandar Seri Begawan, Jan 14— Brunei’s Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, one of the world’s longest‑reigning monarchs, is scheduled to undergo a right total knee replacement surgery this Sunday, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office. The 79‑year‑old ruler will temporarily reduce his physical presence at national and official ceremonies during the recovery period, which is expected to last between two and three months, including physiotherapy sessions.

Officials described the procedure as planned and routine, stressing that His Majesty will continue to carry out his official duties throughout the recovery. “His Majesty will limit his presence at official and national events during the recovery process,” the statement said.

Malaysia’s King Sultan Ibrahim and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim have both conveyed prayers and well wishes for the Sultan’s health, underscoring the close ties between Malaysia and Brunei. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, who ascended the throne in 1967, continues to serve as Brunei’s prime minister, armed forces commander, finance minister, foreign minister and defense minister.

The announcement highlights the Sultan’s enduring role in Brunei’s governance and the nation’s reliance on his leadership, even as he undergoes medical treatment.
