Kuala Lumpur, August 5 – In a speech originally penned by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and delivered by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof at Piazza, Pavilion Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, the enduring legacy of Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, was commemorated. The event, part of the ‘Negarawan Sejuta Jasa’ program, celebrated Tunku’s pivotal role in securing Malaysia’s independence and shaping the nation’s future.”
Addressing a diverse audience, Fadillah emphasized the importance of remembering Tunku’s contributions, quoting the late statesman’s efforts as the foundation for a peaceful and prosperous Malaysia. He reiterated, “As the Malay proverb says, ‘A tiger dies leaving its stripes, a man dies leaving his name.’ This aptly describes the contributions and legacy of the great statesman YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra.”
Fadillah highlighted the significance of the Baling talks in 1955, where Tunku’s leadership and determination convinced the British of the local people’s readiness to govern and demand independence. He also recalled Tunku’s vision in forming Malaysia, which united the Federation of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore, fostering stability and curbing the spread of communism.
He underscored Tunku’s impact on the international stage, particularly in establishing the Association of Southeast Asia (ASA), which later evolved into ASEAN. ‘Tunku’s contributions benefited not only his own country but also neighboring countries,’ remarked Fadillah.
In addition to Tunku’s political achievements, Fadillah acknowledged his efforts to promote Islam and sports, noting the establishment of the Majlis Tilawah al-Quran and the popular Merdeka Cup football tournament.
The event concluded with Fadillah reaffirming the government’s commitment to preserving Malaysia’s independence and fostering a MADANI society characterized by respect, diversity, and peaceful coexistence.
“Tunku Abdul Rahman’s legacy is a testament to his vision for Malaysia, and it is our responsibility to uphold and build upon that legacy,” Fadillah concluded.
The event also featured a comprehensive exhibition held by several agencies, including Jabatan Warisan Negara, Trafik PDRM, Jabatan Perpaduan Negara dan Integrasi Nasional, Jabatan Muzium Malaysia, Perpustakaan Negara Malaysia, and Arkib Negara Malaysia, among others. This exhibition provided attendees with a deeper insight into Malaysia’s cultural and historical journey, further enriching their understanding of the nation’s heritage.
