Kuala Lumpur, July 31 – In a telephone conversation, Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, expressed his shock and condemnation following the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh by the Israeli regime. The conversation with Dr. Basem Naim, a member of the Hamas Political Bureau, took place soon after the news broke, as the Prime Minister was in a Cabinet meeting.
Prime Minister Anwar stated, “Innaillahi wainnailaihi rojiu’n. Dr. Basem, this is Anwar. I don’t know how to express this, but we were in a Cabinet meeting when we received the news of the death of the late Ismail Haniyeh, and the entire Cabinet was shocked by the madness of the Israeli Zionist regime attacking homes and torturing people, thinking this war and violence could end this way. I know that you and Brother Ismail Haniyeh were both warriors and close friends.”
Dr. Basem Naim, still reeling from the loss, responded, “Jazakallah khairan, Jazakallah khairan Brother Anwar, and barakallahufikum for reaching out to us. Yes, we are still shocked by the loss of Brother Haniyeh. This is a huge loss not only for the Palestinian people but for all free humanity. I have known him since childhood; he was a true fighter who dedicated his entire life for the sake of Allah and Islam.”
The Prime Minister reiterated Malaysia’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, emphasizing the importance of continuing Haniyeh’s struggle for freedom and dignity for the Palestinian people. “Dr. Basem, please convey to the family and all our brothers that we remain steadfast in supporting the struggle for a free Palestine. We will continue to do our best to condemn these atrocities.”
Dr. Basem assured that he would relay this message to Haniyeh’s family and the broader movement, acknowledging Malaysia’s and Prime Minister Anwar’s vocal and committed support.
Prime Minister Anwar further expressed his frustration with the international community’s failure to ensure peace and justice, stating, “I know you are busy now, but I must convey, not just on behalf of the family but also for all our brothers here, that we are still shocked and very angry that the international community has failed to fight for and ensure that peace and justice prevail.”
