SINGAPORE, May 4, 2025 – In a defining moment for Singapore’s political future, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has secured a resounding mandate in his first general election as leader, guiding the People’s Action Party (PAP) to a commanding 87-seat victory out of 97 contested seats.
This emphatic win not only cements the long-planned 4G leadership transition but signals widespread public endorsement of Wong’s stewardship just one year after taking over from Lee Hsien Loong.
📌 A Resounding Personal Victory
Wong led by example in Marsiling–Yew Tee GRC, where he and his team — Alex Yam, Zaqy Mohamad, and Hany Soh — triumphed with an impressive 73.46% vote share, a significant rise from 63.18% in 2020. Their main challenger, the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), failed to dent PAP’s stronghold.
Elsewhere, senior party figures such as Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat also won decisively in East Coast GRC, underscoring PAP’s enduring electoral strength.
🗳️ 82% Voter Turnout Reflects National Engagement
With voter turnout reaching 82%, the 2025 General Election saw strong national engagement. The campaign was dominated by key issues such as rising living costs, housing supply, employment prospects, and climate resilience — themes that resonated across age groups.
Wong’s message — promising “stability with renewal” — found favour with the electorate. On the trail, he acknowledged a shifting political climate, declaring, “Every vote must be earned. No seat is safe.”
⚖️ Opposition Holds Its Ground
The Workers’ Party (WP), under Pritam Singh, held firm as Singapore’s most established opposition force, defending its strongholds in Aljunied GRC, Hougang SMC, and Sengkang GRC, thus retaining its 10 seats.
Other opposition parties, including the Progress Singapore Party (PSP) and the SDP, put up spirited fights but failed to break through the PAP stronghold in any new constituency.
🌏 A Clear Mandate for a New Chapter
Wong, 52, now commands a clear runway to implement his vision of a “forward Singapore,” navigating global economic uncertainties, regional security tensions, and complex domestic reforms.
GE2025 has delivered more than a routine victory — it has confirmed a generational shift in Singaporean leadership. The electorate’s message is unmistakable: Wong’s moment has arrived.
Full constituency-level results are pending confirmation by the Elections Department Singapore.
